It’s probably the most heard request for any design company. And it’s understandable, especially from a small business who might not have set brand guidelines. The logo is identity, it’s what sets a business or organization apart as professional, and official. The logo contains the business name, and often a tagline or image that quickly conveys what the business or organization is all about. Where the logo appears is almost as important as the logo itself. Logo location marks something as belonging to or being sanctioned by that same business or organization. And because this small graphic plays such an important role, it’s no wonder owners want that piece front and center, and BIGGER!
Logo size on a website or mobile app
So how big should the logo be?? To answer that question, we need to ask a few subsequent questions.
Does the logo contain words?
If the answer is yes, then the logo should be big enough for the average user to be able to read the words. Nothing is more frustrating than not being able to read words because they are too small.
What shape is the logo?
If your logo is taller, you might want to consider making a “web” version that is arranged differently so it is not all tall. Websites and mobile apps are designed to use horizontal, or landscape, shaped logos. If it is a square or portrait, it will likely look small on the screen.
Is your logo complicated and detailed?
If your logo is too complicated and detailed, consider having a simplified version made for your website and mobile app.
What is a logo’s purpose on a website?
Unlike a brochure or ad space, a logo serves a different purpose on a website. The logo does not have the burden of conveying the business’s full purpose, but rather only its name. The logo is only there as a brand element, stamping a seal of ownership on the website and assuring the user they are on your website. The hero section of the homepage is there to convey your business’s services and purpose.
How big should the logo be?
In most cases the logo should be 50px-100px tall and 100px-250px wide. It’s important to keep the header as slim as possible, the logo is one of the header elements that can most quickly force the header to be taller.
